What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy, also known as cold therapy, is an ancient practice that dates back to 2500 BC. It follows the same principle of ice baths however; cryotherapy is an amplified practice with far greater efficacy and benefits.

Ancient Egyptians were using cold therapy to treat injuries and inflammation. The term ‘Cryotherapy’ actually comes from the Greek words ‘cryo’ and ‘therapeia’ and translates to cold treatment/cure. In 1978 it was formally introduced to western medicine in Japan by a doctor seeking a way to treat rheumatoid arthritis. It’s now widely used by top athletes and wellness centres around the world.

What exactly is Cryotherapy and how does it work?

Cryotherapy, also known as “freezing therapy,” is a safe and effective form of low-temperature therapy that involves exposing the body to subzero temperatures in a Cryo chamber to stimulate your body for optimal healing.

The goal of cryotherapy is to relieve pain and reduce inflammation, but it’s also been shown that it can improve athletic performance, and treat other conditions such as arthritis, inflammation, muscle pain and joint pain. It can also help with weight loss and anti-aging.

During Cryotherapy your body is surrounded by cryogenically cooled air that rapidly drops the skin temperature, triggering your parasympathetic nervous system and alerting the brain to enter a rapid survival mode. This causes your brain to quickly re-route oxygenated blood to vital organs, areas of inflammation/injury, and anywhere in need of repair. As a result, your body now has higher quality oxygen-rich and nutrient-dense blood that is pumped quickly around the body. You can burn up to 800 additional calories during and post-treatment. Cryotherapy is one of the few experiences that activates a full body internal response and requires such a high level of energy to carry out the rejuvenating benefits.

Benefits of Cryotherapy

  • Reduces pain and inflammation
  • Helps with muscle soreness, especially in the legs and arms
  • Improves sleep, fatigue, and reduces cortisol levels
  • Reduces weight gain by increasing metabolism (the rate at which your body burns calories)
  • Improves circulation through increased blood flow to skin cells, which reduces wrinkles and fine lines

Types of Cryotherapies offered at Tsavo

Our cryotherapy is a TGA-registered medical device which is safe and unique, with zero nitrogen exposure. We offer two options:

Whole Body Cryotherapy is a full body experience taken place inside a TGA-registered medical chamber. As your skin quickly cools from the cold environment the body naturally activates repair signals to the brain in order to keep your internal body warm. The entire experience lasts 3 minutes and you can be sure it will leave you with quite an adrenaline rush!

Localised Cryotherapy concentrates on specific areas of the body rather than the entire body. It is focused on targeting a problem area and allows for longer treatment times to that area using therapeutic temperatures.
